Scottish Borders Library Service - Introduction

Scottish Borders Library Service is run by the Scottish Borders Council and exists to serve every member of the public living and working in the Scottish Borders.  The network of  public libraries, mobile library vans, school libraries, hospital library and Scottish Borders Archive and Local History Centre together provide a full range of information services

Most libraries provide access to disabled readers, while six mobile libraries serve the smaller centres of population and the many scattered and isolated households in the rural areas. Visits are on a three or two week rota, depending on your mobile library. Full details of Mobile routes, times etc throughout the Borders can be obtained from Library HQ.

Scottish Borders Library Service offers a wide variety of items for loan in most of its libraries.

Reference, Information and Local Studies - All libraries contain a basic stock of material to answer your reference enquiries and have access to a number of specialised online reference databases via the internet. The larger libraries usually have more comprehensive resources, particularly for local studies. The Scottish Borders Archives and Local History Centre  provides an in-depth back-up service, freely available. If you have an enquiry, please do not hesitate to ask.

In addition to our own service points, we also provide lending services to Homes for the Elderly; Hospitals; Playgroups; Schools; Housebound People.

Membership is free. To join the library all you need  is proof of address.  This must be an official document of some sort which shows your name and address.  Some examples are Driving Licence, Council Tax Bill, Utilities (Gas, electicity, telephone), family allowance book, pension book.  Please ask library staff if you are unsure.

Visitors - visitors are welcome to use our libraries.   You can use the computers or consult materials in the library.  If you would like to borrow items, or will be using the library regularly for a few weeks you can join as Visitor Member for up to 3 months. (This can be renewed further in necessary).  To join as a Visitor you will need to pay a £5 deposit (returned when you return your card) or you can leave an existing library card from your home library as a deposit.

Junior Visitors, under 16 years of age, will require their parent or guardian to complete a membership form and return it to the library in person.
